What's old is new: a 1978 market renamed and reimagined.
A new home for a Canberra institution, the Capital Food Market reimagines the much-loved Belconnen Markets as a fresh food and dining destination for the capital. Working with Elanor Investors Group, we defined the strategy, name, visual identity and graphic system. The identity is grounded in the lettering traditions of historic market halls. The heritage character carries a modern energy, at ease alongside the new building by Stewart Architecture.
Despite the large size of the building, human scale remains front and centre, and our wayfinding system demanded a solution sympathetic to the materials and forms found in the building itself. Folded steel, timber and perforated screens guide visitors through the site to the market hall. Together, they give a long-standing market the presence of a landmark.
